Information on Michael Lacey and Larkin

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin met in the University of Arizona where they had enrolled for studies but later dropped out. They partnered to helm the Phoenix news before acquiring other news outlets such as the LA Weekly, Village Voice, Miami News Time Denver’s news and Westword.

During their career, they have been arrested on several instances with most cases being labeled as a violation of the First Amendment.

The recent event relates to the shutting of the Backpage.com and their arrests by the FBI. The security agency held that the backapge.com website uploaded offensive materials that prompted prostitution.

Events that led to their Arrest and Seizure of Backpage.com

Both Lacey and Larkin were arrested by the FBI and charged with promoting online prostitution through their website Backpage.com. The federal agents raided their houses and confiscated property.

Although the pair had sold the Village Voice media in 2012, they had remained with the Backpage.com. Currently, they face the accusation of sex trafficking and operating an online brothel. However, it is worth noting that partners sold the Backpage.com interests to Carl Ferrer.

Although there are other individuals who are connected to the events, it is only the Lacey and Larkin who have been charged. However, the move by the government to seize and shut down the website is a violation of the freedom of expression and speech. Read more: Michael Lacey | GAtech and Michael Lacey | Wikipedia

Their defense attorney argues that the operations of the website were protected by the First Amendment. There is also the impression that many people pushing for the prosecution of Larkin and Lacey have ill motives or past grudges. An example is Cindy McCain who is a foe of Backpage.com.

The creation of the Fonterra Fund

The arrest of Lacey and Larkin in 2007 by the Arizona Sherriff Arpaio propelled the creation of the Fonterra Fund. Before the arrests, they had published Arpaio’s misdeeds and violation of human rights in Arizona.

The Phoenix publication indicated that Arizona’s Sherriff and his allies breached the constitution. However, a national outcry led to their release and they embarked on the creation of the fund.

They held that immigrants in Arizona underwent numerous violations and thus deserved the funds. The objective of the initiative was to put to a stop the arrest and harassment of immigrants in the region. Learn more about Michael Lacey: https://mathalliance.org/mentor/michael-lacey/
